The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation (The Park Board)
|
| Type of Funding: community centres, park related events | The formal provision of Recreation services in the City of Vancouver began through the Vancouver Board of Parks & Recreation and the operation of community centres. That was 40 years ago. Today the Board operates 21 community centres in joint partnership with local community centre associations and there are about 170 parks. Arts related programs, activities and initiatives have been a part of this development.
"Vision for the Future", the Strategic Plan of the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation, states the following two goals:
1."To provide, or facilitate the provision of, facilities to offer all citizens the opportunity for recreation activity."
2."To provide or facilitate the provision of physical, social, cultural, artistic, and intellectual recreation activities that meet the needs of all segments of the population."
Funding Programs| Neighbourhood Matching Fund | The City of Vancouver Parks Board Neighbourhood Matching Fund is a program that provides support and funding to projects that want to improve the community and provide neighbourhood connections. This site provides instructions on how to apply and the deadlines for applications, which are March 31st and October 31st. | | Artist in Residence |
This Artist in Residence Program is based on principles of community cultural development and is funded by the Vancouver Board of Parks & Recreation in partnership with Community Centre Associations. Its purpose is to support artists working with communities on issues of joint interest or concern.
Each year a limited number of Community Centres host an Artist in Residence. Although traditionally residencies require an artist to live at a designated location, the term 'residence' in this program refers to the artist's commitment to and consideration of the peoples, places and issues located in the participating communities.
Artists regularly teach programs and participate in special events, celebrations and festivals at Community Centres. The Artist in Residence Program complements these established relationships by providing the opportunity for an artist to work for an extended period developing innovative strategies for involving diverse members of a neighbourhood in joint creative practices.
During the residencies each artist establishes a presence at the sponsoring Community Centre. Depending on the nature of the residency this presence can take many forms, including working in a designated studio area, attending committee meetings, leading workshops, arranging project progress displays and/or creating some other form of connection with the centre. Artists will often work out of the centre with community groups.
The residencies are based on terms of approximately 400 hours. The intention and desire is that there be a lasting impact or 'legacy' from the projects, whether it involves new understandings of creative processes, the development of collaborative skills, a stronger community bond or an artwork which in some form remains in the community.
