Move It!
orangebox Artist/ Facilitator:  Joe Laughlin

MOVE IT! Artist-In-Residence, a Vancouver Park and Recreation Program. An initiative to get our kids moving. Workshops specifically designed to engage young people in the creative process of dancemaking. A series of workshops for youth culminating in a community production, Move It! was intended to build community through participation in movement activities and integrate youth into the creation of choreographed events. Joe Ink presented Move It! as Artist-In-Residence at the West End Community Centre in May and June, and at the Dance Centre in August, 2002.

MOVE IT! Residency at the Dance Centre, Vancouver

Move It! is a community dance creation residency with the dance company Joe Ink, which engages people in the community in building a dance performance. Artistic Director and choreographer Joe Laughlin and an assistant work with people who may never have danced, including youth, seniors and children. Joe's intention is "to discover the movement that is inherent in every body and translate it into a physical language that can be integrated into a variety of performance situations." Joe Laughlin's recent experience is in South Africa, where dance is a part of the culture. Joe creates opportunities for participants to understand and explore movement as a vital form of human expression. "Movement is our first language, it is universal, the most basic form of communication."

Purpose:

The purpose of Move It! is to build an integrated community through movement; to build awareness of the body, of body language and of movement in people of all ages; to demonstrate the value of dance as a vehicle for community development; to provide a performance in and with the community.

The Residency

Move It! residencies include movement classes, dance creation exercises and the development of a dance work that is performed at the end of the session.
