Artists and neighbourhood residents collaborated to create a gateway garden and meditative labyrinth at Renfrew Ravine. Both features are at street level and enhance residents' ability to use the Ravine for walking and relaxation. The project is part of a larger strategy by the community to create amenities and foster neighbourhood interaction and identity.
Community workshops happened every Saturday and evolved as the project evolved. These included activities such as digging soil and chip mulch to making pebble mosaics, creating a sliced stone mosaic centre piece, collecting river rocks and digging trenches to create the labyrinth (note: the stones for the labyrinth needed to be slightly below ground level so that the Parks Board could mow over the labyrinth keeping the grass short).
Participants ranged in age from 4 to 84. Several classes from Windermere High School helped with designing the garden layout, landscaping, moving soil, planting native plants, creating artwork for the signs and installing posts for birdhouses. Students from Vancouver Christian School also assisted in creating the labyrinth and the pebble mosaics, collecting river rocks, and moving dirt around.
