The River
orangebox Artist/ Facilitator:  Karen Jamison

The River is about rivers, and the connection between the concrete reality of a real outdoor river and "the river within", the network of body systems carrying the energy and images that feed our spiritual life as well as the fluids of our physical life. The River traces the memory of Brewery Creek through the landscape it had flowed for centuries. Its shape is still visible in the streets and alleyways of our city, defining our neighbourhoods.

Karen Jamieson Dance Company, in collaboration with the Brewery Creek Historical Society and other community groups, created a processional performance to honour the layers of history and memory of a now-buried waterway. The entire performance of The River took place over two weeks and is a journey, following the path of the buried Brewery Creek. The River is a site specific performance event that took place in early May, 1998. Starting at the creek's source at the Mountain View Cemetery at 33rd Avenue and Fraser Streets, it then meandered west to Main Street and then east and south to empty into what were once the mudflats of False Creek. It ended with a performance at the Roundhouse Community Centre.
