Community Walls/Community Voices
orangebox Artist/ Facilitator:  Richard Tetrault  Dan Bushnell  Jerry Whitehead

Community Walls/Community Voices, sponsored by The Native Education Centre, involved the First Nations, immigrant, non-immigrant and business communities living and working in the Mount Pleasant and Grandview/Woodlands areas of Vancouver. Foremost the project emphasizes the merging histories and futures important to each participant. The theme "Origins" allowed people a broad interpretation. Some mosaics dealt with cultural origins, others with personal history and some with the larger geographical and political history of Trout Late.

Each participant of the project engaged in the making of a medallion shaped mosaic, transforming histories and experiences into colourful imagery. 28 mosaic medallions were designed by individuals or community groups such as Youth Against Violence, Trout Lake Seniors and the Purple Thistle Youth Drop-in. Using ceramic tiles, these designs were then fabricated by groups of volunteers with technical advice and assistance from the professional artists. One of the largest, an aboriginal bear design by Richard Shorty, is two metres across; the smallest is about half a metre. All 28 medallions are installed according to height along the graduated retaining wall, with a pattern of coloured concrete placed behind them. In total, the art work covers approximately 1500 sq ft of a 4900 sq ft wall.
