The sponsoring organization, Aunt Leah's Independent Lifeskills Society, worked with artist Eric Neighbour to create 17 insect sculptures to perch on public buildings, adding humour and visual interest to the Marpole streetscape.
Aunt Leah's has been involved in community art projects in Marpole for years. Aunt Leah's is dedicated to assisting youth and families in learning the necessary lifeskills for successful independence. The organization provides an integrated approach to services for youth, primarily offering residential, lifeskills and pre-employment training programs. Art projects have always been present in one form or another. Aunt Leah's had a gallery for 5 years which showcased youth art, hosting over 20 exhibitions. The agency initiated a mural project, hosted "Artists Around Us" (the Marpole version of Kitsilano's "Artists in our Midst") for two years, and had a theatre training program which guided youth through writing and performing plays.
Project Dragonfly: workshops were hosted one per month, with community members from the entire spectrum of ages, cultural backgrounds, etc., and youth from Aunt Leah's programs. Participants worked together to learn the process and come up with an idea for their groups (usually 3-5 people). Artist Eric Neighbour, with facilitators, then helped them to turn their ideas into a 3-dimensional sculpture. The process of building the sculptures was also a valuable learning experience for everyone. Being able to turn ideas into this fantastic 3-dimensional creation was very exciting. Community members did not work on the final stages of the sculpture. The materials used required someone skilled and aware of necessary safety precautions.
